As a permanent, full-time R&D (Research and Development) Technologist you will work on exciting, innovative R&D projects and have the opportunity to apply your creativity and resourcefulness to achieve unique solutions. At the forefront of new product development, the R&D Technologist will be front and center, making an impact on our brand, while continuing to learn and develop with our growing company!

As an integral member of the team, you will be responsible for innovation and many of the creative outcomes. It is best suited to someone who thinks outside of the box, likes to have fun and work with people, along with a love for all things chocolate of course.

What you will be doing

• Testing chocolate and confectionery recipes for scale-up capability; transforming into tasting samples utilizing pilot-sized mixers, refining, conching, and tempering machines.
• Producing prototype chocolate and confectionery products (truffles, clusters, bars, bark, panned and enrobed items) by hand or by machine.
• Analyzing & testing confection samples and ingredients using test kitchen lab equipment (viscometer, refractometer, pH meter, moisture analyzer, micrometer, colorimeter, tempermeter).
• Conducting bake or application tests.
• Collaborating & communicating test results to Management on new formulations.
• Organizes, calibrates, maintains and arranges for cleaning and maintenance of the test kitchen, processing and lab equipment.
• Maintains & replenishes inventory of raw materials and consumables.
• Provides recommendations for optimizing recipes to achieve operational efficiencies.
• Maintains equipment manuals, SOP’s, and MSDS files for lab equipment.

What you will bring with you

• Bachelor of Food Science or equivalent.
• 5+ years of progressive experience in industrial food manufacturing environments; with at least 3 years experience in operations.
• 2+ years of demonstrated practical experience within a test kitchen or food production lab.
• A proven ability to communicate in English, both written and verbally, to varied audiences.
• Mechanical aptitude with the ability to run and troubleshoot industrial food manufacturing equipment.
• Physically capable of lifting >50 lbs regularly; manually handle (load/unload) materials in both easy and awkward positions.
• Enthusiastic and self-starting; working with a sense of urgency.
• Strong time management skills; adaptable, flexible, able to handle multiple projects or changing priorities.
• Exceptional attention to detail, record keeping, and organization.
• An attitude of curiosity, creativity, and focus on continuous learning.
• Experience in and knowledge of chocolate making and processing - an asset.
