BC Food & Beverage would like to define what Essential Service means for our industry, and more importantly identify what needs to change in our food system for that to have significant meaning. Greater competitiveness, growth, priority access to resources, a streamlined regulatory framework, etc. are but a few of the potential solutions.
This Roundtable discussion will bring together industry leaders to discuss what steps BCFB should advocate for from federal and provincial government (and potential other stakeholders) in order for the food and beverage industry to be truly considered an economic priority in BC and Canada
Food as an Essential Service – what needs to change?
- Prior to the pandemic, people took for granted where their food came from. The food industry wasn’t even considered an essential service, which was potentially crippling when a state of emergency was declared and processors lost access to PPE and other services.
- Since that time, we hear about how food is essential, and the need to protect our food systems is a priority, but nothing significant has really changed
